“The light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not overcome it” John 1:5

Do you remember being afraid of the dark as a child? I guess not everyone goes through a time of being scared of the dark but I do feel it is one of those human experiences that we all have some sort of memory of. Whether we grew up with a night light, or our door cracked with the hall light on we needed some sort of security in the midst of darkness. I remember I would want my parents to leave the door cracked, not completely shut it so that there would be a sliver of light that came through. That sliver of light gave me a little peace as I went to sleep, that there was still light in the darkness of my room, that I knew my parents were still on the other side of the hall if I ever needed them. I still had the comfort of knowing someone was nearby and that gave me enough peace to fall asleep.
That feeling of a sliver of light to give us calm, to give us peace, to allow our hearts, bodies and spirit to be at rest is just the smallest glimpse of what the light of Christ does in our lives. The fact that my body could be at rest because a sliver of light would shine through my room, gives me such expectancy in the magnitude of what the power of the light of Christ could do in my life. That His light is one that doesn’t just come as a sliver, it’s not just a glimpse in the darkness, it’s not small and “just enough” to get us by but rather it overcomes the darkness. The darkness can not win against the light of Christ. It’s not “just enough” to get us through the night and allow us to fall asleep in peace but it’s abundantly more. It’s light that overcomes. It’s light that takes the darkness out. It's light that allows us to have forever hope, peace and security.
The glimmer of light that a cracked door can bring is a moment of security, but the light of Christ is an identity of security. It’s not a fleeting feeling, it’s a source of life. It’s not a moment of overcoming but it’s a light that is neverending.
Are you seeing Christ’s light as just a cracked door in this season, giving you just enough to get by or do you see Him in all His fullness as cascading light that came to overcome?
