I have said these things to you, that in Me you may have peace. John 16:33

Loss can be so destructive in a sneaky way. It’s a moth that has found your favorite sweater and chewed a hole in it. On the outside we can appear to have it all together but up close there’s a tear. This time of year can feel that way too. Sparkle, candy cane swirls, lights flashing, songs belted out but inside there’s a whirlwind of emotions. It’s so easy to rest our peace on the completion of a checklist, a gathering with no arguments, pictures with no tantrums…but those are fleeting moments. And are they actually a good indicator of peace? Maybe just self-control…or actually a good facade. After all, Jesus' entry into the world was anything but peaceful as we consider it. Not having a humane place to stay, birthing a child around farm animals, shepherds scared out of their wits, a king on a killing rampage. These are things of turmoil, nightmares, and major discomfort. Peace I’ve learned isn’t an avoidance of pain or discomfort, but a choice. A choice that despite your circumstances you will look to Christ in hope. That the voice on repeat inside your mind will not be one of disappointment but that of God’s blessed assurance. That the time you have will be spent seeking out the face of Jesus and not being harried. That you choose to usher in the Prince of Peace inside your heart and not just throw a bow and smile on to get the season over. Jesus came for so much more than Christmas carols and church attendance. He came to be in a relationship with you, which includes where you put your trust and the control over your thoughts.
What is something that you need to give over to God to be a little more in His peace? God can handle it! Is there anything you need to say “no” to that could make more breathing room this holiday season?
