Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27

How good is it when someone comes through on their promise? Maybe they promised you a promotion at your job and it came through, or a friend promised they would show up on a big day and they went above and beyond to make it special, or a parent promised they would cheer for your game in the stands and they were there early with signs and loud cheers. Whatever that moment may have been for you, the feeling of a promise from someone we love and that person following through on their word does something for our spirits. We feel cared for, seen, valued and loved. What a great feeling. Think about that right now, the feeling of being cared for, seen, valued and loved. That feeling that we may have experienced through a human relationship is small in comparison to the promises of God being fulfilled.
In this passage Jesus is speaking about a promise. He is saying that there is a promise of hope to come, that there is a promise of the Holy Spirit that is going to be with us always. That even though He came and breathed life in human form and will die and leave us, something better is coming. This promise is one that exceeds all of our expectations. It’s the greatest promise that we can experience in this life, the gift of the Holy Spirit which will be the peace He leaves with us. Verse 26 right before this says: “But the Advocate the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.” Then Jesus goes on and says, this is the peace I leave you with, a peace (a promise) that will be with you forever that will be a peace that is far greater than this world. A peace that is far greater than any promise this world has to offer. He gave us the greatest promise, and He fulfilled it. God always comes through on His word.

So in this Advent season let us rest in knowing that God is a God of promise. That His peace is a gift and all we have to do is accept it. Will we accept His peace today?
